Orientation Guidebook

Welcome!

Film school orientation for new students is held Monday, August 18 through Wednesday, August 20. It’s three full days of workshops and breakout sessions, so be prepared to work!

The primary goal of orientation is to give students a preview of the creative, collaborative, hands-on culture at the film school. It also serves as a “pre-flight check” to make sure that all onboarding has been squared away and that students have acquired all the gear they will need for a smooth start to the year.

To begin your journey, please review all the information in this orientation guidebook and complete any assigned tasks before film school orientation begins in August.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON BEFORE ORIENTATION

  1. School Policies – All new students are required to read these policies before the start of film school orientation. To ensure that everyone is familiar with this information, you will be asked to sign a document that you acknowledge and agree to these policies.
  2. Required Personal Items – Each student is required to have a set of personal items for use in classes and film productions. Please acquire all these items before the start of film school orientation.
  3. Getting Hired as a Technician – The College hires every student as a Technician, so that they are qualified and insured to drive school production vehicles. A valid Driver’s License and Social Security card is needed for this process.
  4. Academic Onboarding – Complete all the necessary steps to ensure that you are onboarded into your major and are in good-standing to be registered for classes.
  5. Student Health Insurance and Immunization Requirements – Obtain and submit all the necessary documents needed to meet the University’s requirements for health insurance and immunization.
  6. Orientation Information form – Please complete this form before August 15th, to provide us with important information for orientation and to ensure your acknowledgement of key policies.

WHAT TO BRING TO ORIENTATION

  1. Bring all the technology and production tools from your major’s list of required personal items. This gear will be checked on the first day of orientation to ensure you have what you need for classes.
  2. Bring a bag or backpack to keep your items in, along with a pen and paper.Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. Boots are ideal. Tennis shoes are fine. Flip-flops, sandals, ballet flats, and shoes that don’t provide protection for your whole foot are not appropriate.
  3. Wear comfortable clothes that you can physically work in. Layers are good because it can get hot on the sound stages but be cold in our classrooms.
